Helmuth began in a small detached garage with a group of artists working under the collective name URADNZA. Motivation for the project grew from a frustration that a certain kind of exhibition opportunity was lacking in San Diego. There seemed to be a chasm in the scene with salon-style barroom walls on one side and high-dollar white box outfits on the other. The really good stuff happens in that fuzzy place between an artist's studio and the commercial world and without underground spaces to experiment some of the more enigmatic ideas never see the light of day. We believe that the creative process is electrified when afforded a little room to riff and the encouragement to not let up until you go supernova. Or the opening date you listed in City Beat rolls around.
